Gray Communications Renews Eight Broadcast Stations

Atlanta-Based TV Group Signs Deal for Five-Year Renewals

12/26/2001

Denver, CO — Encoda Systems, the company created by combining the operations of Columbine JDS Systems, DAL/Drake Automation, and Enterprise Software, today announced that Atlanta-based television group Gray Communications has signed five-year renewal contracts for eight stations on Encoda’s Columbine and JDS traffic systems.

Gray Communications operates 13 television stations, three NBC affiliates and 10 CBS affiliates, in the Southeast and Midwest United States. The company’s Lexington, Ky., station, WKYT, was a beta site for early releases of the Columbine system nearly 30 years ago. Gray is renewing WKYT’s contract and contracts for stations located in Hazard (WYMT), Ky.; Knoxville (WVLT), Tenn.; North Augusta (WRDW), S.C.; Eau Claire (WEAU), Wis.; and Waco (KWTX), Sherman (KXII), and Bryan (KBTX), Texas.

“During the 14 years our station has been operating on an Encoda traffic system, we’ve been very satisfied with the application we’ve gotten from it,” said Chris Baker, executive vice president, and general manager at the WVLT, Knoxville, property of Gray Communications. “We’ve been able to use Encoda reports to track our performance and analyze our operational efficiency. It has also proven to be a reliable resource for ensuring that our clients’ commercials are scheduled properly, and air as intended.”

The Columbine and JDS systems, well-established media management systems within the broadcast industry, address a variety of essential traffic-management activities including spot and media scheduling, logging, and inventory management, as well as sales, reconciliation, and electronic invoicing.

“We’re very pleased that we were able to arrange a partnership with Encoda that will continue to be relatively affordable while providing us with the up-to-date systems and support we need to operate successfully,” added Baker, who helped to develop renewal contracts for the Gray stations in his region. “In addition to existing reporting capabilities that have helped us run efficiently in the past, we were able to include in the renewal a few new features that provide us with a state-of-the-art traffic system.”

“Gray Communications’ sustained commitment to the Columbine and JDS systems is a real testament to the quality and reliability of our traffic systems,” said Greg Jacobsen, CEO at Encoda Systems. “We’ve been advancing the technology for traffic and management systems for more than 30 years, and we are proud to maintain the long-term relationships with such customers as Gray Communications.”
